“Very Bitter Dialogue...”
For decades, I warned that the rift between a coming “United States of
Europe” and the United States of America would begin with disputes over
trade! In dozens of articles and a major booklet (“Europe and America in
Prophecy”) I have outlined what is prophesied to occur between Europe and
the US; what role a united Europe will play in the Middle East.
Now, as President Bush prepares for a the EU-US Summit, to take place on Thursday, Simon Serfaty, who is director of the Europe Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, says, “The Europeans don’t seem eager to follow us, whether on Iraq or Israel” and commented that the conflicting attitudes had led to “a very bitter dialogue.”
Decades ago, I reported there had been “shouting matches” between American and European officials; that the growing economic strength of Europe and its search for world markets would lead to clashes with the US.
As the Europeans began coalescing together as “United Europe” it became clear that US manufacturers and businesses were being walled out. The strategy adopted by US auto makers was to open up plants in Europe, while, some years later, major German automobile manufacturers began buying into large US firms. Remember, the move toward unity in Europe was primarily economic at first, based upon ridding the participating countries of prohibitive tariffs and customs taxes.
For decades, German leaders have said that Germany must begin speaking with a voice in global affairs commensurate with her industrial and economic strength. Few Americans can appreciate the German mind set, or, for that matter, the attitude of the French.
Millions bask in the naive assumption that the Germans love their conquerors; that the French should be grateful for the fact that Americans came to their rescue in two World Wars. The opposite is true. For many decades, Germans have been bitter over the protracted presence of thousands of US soldiers on German soil. Sensational cases of crimes committed by a few US servicemen have been emblazoned across the front pages of German newspapers and news magazines since the 1950's. Because such offenses, including rape and murder sometimes involved minorities, the xenophobic among the German populace reacted even more angrily. Racism and violence against foreigners in Germany, and increasingly in France, is not new.
Most Americans stationed in Germany keep pretty much to themselves, and avoid neighborhoods where they know they will encounter hostility. The only way an American can understand the German mind set is to imagine we LOST World War II, and that we had been occupied by Germany and Japanese troops for the last fifty seven years! Most Americans are blissfully ignorant of Europe. They know little or nothing of European history, and the majority would be hard put to locate most European countries on a map!
Bible prophecy says the union of ten kings (Biblical metaphor, perhaps, for Premiers, Presidents, Prime Ministers, or even literal kings) will be a union of Church And State and will also be a vast MERCHANDISING power. Both of these prophetic descriptions are rapidly developing.
Christ’s visions given to John included a vivid description of a huge economic power which would be the greatest the world had ever seen (Revelation 18:11-18). A “summit” is a meeting between top governmental leaders for the purpose of talking over a lengthy, often complicated, number of issues. While the top leaders may attend “photo ops”, and appear making statements about how “successful” their meetings were; how “frank and open” their discussions; how “helpful and meaningful” their conclusions, the real tough talk, bargaining, threats, counter threats and “bitter dialogue” ensues between lower level officials behind closed doors.
Bush will meet with both the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, former Prime Minister of Italy, and the current President of the EU (a rotating Presidency), Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar. Foremost on their agendas will be discussion of the growing differences between the US and EU stances on the Middle East, specifically the Bush “doctrine” concerning terrorism (and the US tilt toward Israel, such as it is), and US plans to topple the regime of Saddam Hussein.
It is expected that Bush will depend on the US to go it alone, if necessary, with the help of Tony Blair and the British. Serfaty was expressing the opinion that Bush is liable to say to the Europeans, “...if you cannot follow us, please stand aside.”
Why are the Europeans so seemingly moderate toward the Palestinians and Iraq; why are so many Europeans anti-Semitic? Not only does Germany, and much of the rest of Europe, have a history of anti-Semitism, there are almost eighteen million Muslims living in Europe, many of them in Germany and France. They form a very powerful voting bloc. It has been said that no new Chancellor can be elected in Germany without the Muslim vote.
There are millions of Americans, Canadians, Australians and Britons who would do well to remember the warnings I shouted over television all through the later 1950's, through all the 1960's, and most of the ‘70's, about the fact that Germany would be reunited; that eastern European countries would form a part of a coming “United States of Europe,” and the consequences to our peoples after such a gigantic super state became reality.
I have a personally autographed copy of a book by the late Franz Josef Strauss, former Defense Minister of Germany, and head of the Christian Socialist Union party of Bavaria. It is entitled “Challenge and Response,” and clearly espouses the doctrine that Europe should eventually develop its own military, armed with nuclear weapons.
While Americans are chilled at the specter of Iraq and Iran, and other “rogue” states developing weapons of mass destruction, most view with benign unconcern the vast and growing French nuclear arsenal, or the fact that intelligence reports indicated Germany had collaborated with South Africa in developing nuclear weapons decades ago.
Biblical prophecy says TEN KINGS will form the “beast” power: “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
“These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
“These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful” (Revelation 17:12-14).
Are these kings symbolic of only ten specific political entities, ruled over by ten “dictators” or despots, or are they symbolic of more than ten political entities? We may be surprised to learn, eventually, that a coming global economic collapse may lead to the sudden rise to power of dictators and military governments, imposing martial law so as to restore “order” to anarchistic, violent populations. The “bitter dialogue” is not only coming from Europe. Many in the government of the United States are about fed up with European criticism.
Serfaty pointed out that there are all kinds of “soft targets” in Europe for terrorists, and said “The next wave of terror will be in Europe, not here.” Perhaps he is engaging in wishful thinking, in the assumption that a massive terrorist attack in Europe would change the attitude of Europe toward Saddam and the Palestinians.
