“Awwww”... What, No ‘Shock And Awe’?

By Garner Ted Armstrong

Like kids who were frustrated when a firecracker fizzled on the fourth of July, pundits and officials alike are now carping “There was no shock and awe!”

They say Saddam was clearly not shocked; that the Iraqi leader and his vaunted elite “Republican Guard” divisions are certainly not in “awe” of the US/UK coalition attacks.

Of course, if one is either dead, or grievously wounded, and on life-support in a deep underground bunker, it is difficult to register shock and awe. More like plaintive grunts and groans, and cries for water.

Jesus Christ dealt with childish petulance on the part of those who find that others just never measure up to their ridiculous expectations.  He said to the Pharisees, “Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

“They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.

“For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.

“The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!” (Luke 7:32-34). To carnal, obtuse minds, you are hanged if you do; hanged if you don’t. “You don’t dance to our tune” is a popular game just now. The “elite” acting community of Hollywood plays it; retired generals play it; the media plays it; those with an axe to grind against others in power play it.

Because the Bush administration received last-minute information from intelligence that Saddam and his sons were in a particular bunker in a specific palace in Baghdad, the signal went out to hastily alter the war plan. In place of a gigantic “shock and awe” bombing by massed aircraft and missiles, calculated to so stun the leadership and the Iraqi military that they would quickly fold and surrender, a precision strike took place with a number of cruise missiles and laser-guided bombs dropped by F-117 stealth aircraft on that specific palace. It has been explained time and time again that this was a “target of opportunity” and too critical a target to pass up. Ergo: The War Plan was altered; in place of massive shock and awe, a precision strike was carried out, which launched the war.

From that time to this, there has been no clear, provable evidence that Saddam is alive.

As a matter of fact, the US is waging a propaganda war, continually disparaging the obviously heavily edited video tapes of the Iraqi leader which have been shown; saying he never speaks of specific events; holds up a current newspaper; gives any evidence to prove any of the tapes have been made subsequent to that initial attack.

As a matter of fact, the world has never seen a military operation progress so rapidly, so far, with so few casualties on the attacking side.

As I write, US/UK coalition forces are within only a few miles of Baghdad; the skyline (lit up brightly by exploding bombs and missiles each night) is clearly visible to them on the horizon. They have captured the key port city of Umm Qasr; secured the southern oil fields; secured key bridges; prevented the destruction of a huge dam which would have flooded the plain over which they were to approach the capital. They have destroyed at least two armored enemy divisions; destroyed hundreds of tanks and military vehicles; taken over 9,000 enemy prisoners; rescued one of our own POW’s; destroyed the Baath Party headquarters.

But this is not enough for the children in the marketplace.

In a lead article on World Net Daily, posted Thursday morning, April 3, by Paul Sperry, the headline read, “NO SHOCK, NO AWE: IT NEVER HAPPENED.” The subhead said, “Officials: Pentagon pulled super-punch promised, and doesn’t plan to deliver it.”

In pugilistic parlance, “pulling one’s punches” means pulling back on the swing, so as to either miss the opponent, or barely graze him.

So the Pentagon “pulled it’s super punch?” No shock and awe? Awwwwwwwwwww...

The article said, “Shock and awe, as planned, was supposed to be a short but ferocious and nonstop bombing campaign simultaneously directed across a broad number of targets – from command-and-control centers in Baghdad to the Baath Party headquarters there to the Republican Guard divisions in the field. More firepower was to be unleashed on Iraq in just the first few days of the operation than in the entire 38-day air campaign of the 1991 Gulf war – with the goal being to stun Saddam's regime into surrendering.

But there was no shock, and the Baghdad Butcher apparently has not been “awed.”

The gentleman who came up with the concept of “shock and awe” who has been interviewed by FNC, was also quoted in the article. He is one Harlan Ullman, who claims he is the creator of the S&A doctrine. But he says he doesn’t recognize the doctrine being carried out in Iraq. He said, “The current campaign does not appear to correspond to what we envisioned.”

Oh dear.

Seems the Pentagon just does not dance to the tune; does not play the game according to the rules envisioned by some strategists; does not satisfy the assumptions of some retired (and some active) military officers.

They need to exercise patience. Perhaps it will eventually be proved that Saddam was experiencing a lot more awe than they thought; perhaps it will be proved he is still in shock.

Some people are just never satisfied. Thankfully, arm chair generals do not wage war, and eventually, like General Douglas MacArthur, they will “just fade away.”
