From grasshopers to mealworms, Singapore okays bugs for human consumption

Singapore has become the latest country to allow 16 species of insects for human consumption, including crickets, grasshoppers, grubs, and even mealworms.

Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, where insects have been part of the street food menu for a long time, Singapore has avoided edible insects so far due to its strict safety and hygiene restrictions.

However, the country has now reversed this policy to increase food security, as it imports almost 90 percent of its food. In 2019, the island nation declared it was aiming to produce 30 percent of its nutritional needs by 2030.
