China and Japan have pledged to strengthen communication over maritime issues and hold a new round of economic talks in an effort to stabilise relations, but a number of sticking points remain.
Following Thursday’s meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the two sides released a five-point document that said they had agreed to abide by previously established principles that they should be “partners, not threats” and pledged to strengthen mutual trust and coordination on international affairs.
