Kabul, March 4 (Prensa Latina) The number of deaths due to heavy rains and floods that have affected southern Afghanistan since the weekend has risen to 59, while another 10 remain missing, official sources said on Monday.
A communique from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that among the missing there are children and reported damage to schools and hospitals.
According to the authorities, a total of 17 provinces were affected by heavy rains, especially the southern Kandahar and Helmand and western Farah.
This is a preliminary balance, the number of dead and injured could increase in the next hours because we have almost no communication with some regions and experts are still assessing the damage, said the authorities quoted by the news agency Pajhwok.
In addition, heavy winter snowfalls obstruct rescue efforts before these events and have left isolated areas and thousands of displaced people still remain in temporary camps.
So far this year, 50 people have lost their lives due to flooding in Afghanistan.
