Record Highs in Illegal Crossings at Canada-U.S. Border Expected This Year

Reports suggest that the rate of migrants illegally traversing the border between Canada and the United States could surpass previous years’ figures.

Data provided by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicates a surge in migrant encounters along the northern border—with figures from October 2023 to April 2024 reaching 9,460, still with five months left in the fiscal year to be counted.

The entire 2023 fiscal year saw 10,021 illegal border crossings, a high score that seems likely to be overtaken given current trends.

The Swanton sector, covering parts of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, has especially felt this increase, citing over 1,400 apprehensions in April alone—more than the combined total of the past two fiscal years.
